Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my first massage therapy treatment?

Prior to the first treatment session, an in depth consultation is carried out to ensure that massage is appropriate. The consultation form consists of questions about your health and lifestyle, allowing the therapist to determine the best treatment plan for you. This lasts about 15 minutes. While holistic therapies are generally beneficial and safe there are certain medical conditions which might contra-indicate the treatment. In these instances, you may require your GP’s approval to undertake treatment. After the consultation, the therapist will prepare the allocated area for the treatment. The therapist will provide all the necessary equipment.

What should I wear during my massage?

For treatments such as Indian Head Massage and Hopi Ear Candling, you should wear loose comfortable clothing. Shoes and socks should be removed before a Reflexology treatment.
For all other body treatments, you will be asked to remove clothing from the area being treated, but you will not be asked to remove underwear. A towel will be used at all times to cover areas not being worked on, to keep you warm and comfortable.

What should I be aware of?

Please do not have a massage on a full stomach. Allow at least 1 hour. As, during massage, the body releases toxins, you might feel light headed, dizzy or even have headaches. This is a completely natural reaction. Feeling soreness in your muscles the next day is also perfectly natural. Any adverse reactions will only last for 24 – 48 hours. In order for your body to adjust after the treatment and to help to decrease these symptoms, you should drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol on the day of the treatment. You may only experience a sense of calm and relaxation after a treatment with no adverse effects.

What do I do during a massage treatment?

Make yourself comfortable. If the therapist wants you to adjust your position they will either move you or ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and completely relax during the session; others prefer to talk. It’s up to you. It’s your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions and all feedback is welcome, whether it is positive or negative.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required really depends upon how long you have had your symptoms and how severe they are. For example, if you have had back pain for years, then one treatment will not bring absolute relief from the pain.  You should see improvement in three to five treatments. A change in habits such as posture, exercise and nutrition will help the effects of the treatment to last longer.
